A good chisel sharpener are more important than we think - Here's What We Have at the Workshop
Share
Our thoughts on chisel sharpeners. Do they matter? Well, yes.
These 3 we have at the workshop, they have all served us well, no complaints at all. Some fine kit which we are happy to recommend. The only one which didn't serve its purpose was thrown, so no need to name as it no longer does us harm. A peace offering.
Whatever your job or project, sharp chisels are critical. A clean, sharp point is necessary for the crisp, accurate cuts you require from your tools. Whichever brand of chisel, its only going to be as good as the sharpener you use. Here are the ones currently in use at our wood workshop with links to the best prices we found.
Trend FastTrack MK2 Sharpener
The Trend FastTrack MK2 is a modest size and a very user friendly sharpener which has become somewhat of a legend amongst professionals. It comes with fixed angle guides for perfect angle control. Replaceable diamond stones ensure longevity.
Work Sharp WS3000 Wood Tool Sharpener
If you sharpen your chisels regularly or work for a bigger workshop this beast is great. Quick to sharpen multiple tools and high precision. Includes a tool rest to enhance consistency and is quite unique in which you can see the edge you are working on. Also really good for flattening backs. Only downsides are that its a little pricey and bench space is needed, although that may be unavoidable if your looking for a sharpening tool which offers so much.
Naniwa Japanese Waterstones
Old school. Very hands on and traditional. Great for close control and getting a solid, polished finish. Takes a little more time to master but the extra effort is worth the results if you value a superior finish on your chisel. A little maintenance necessary but is to be expected high precision kit.
