Should You Panel Your Walls?

We've used many fantastic products over the years

Wall panelling is the answer to a lot of questions. We have been installing it in home for over a decade and cant think of a more efficient way to add style. You can turn the worst wall in your house into the best for quite a low cost. Some, but not too much is the best policy. From MDF style Jacobean or Shaker, to Slatted Style Panelling which come in an enormous variety of colours and textures. Here's some advice from the DAB team.

Why Panel Your Walls?

Panelling your walls is a lot more affordable than people think. It contributes massively to the aesthetics of a room, which could often be a dealmaker when selling your home. Also, wall panelling can drag a whole house into 2025, tilting the scales from unfurnished to modern furbished. This effects house valuation and can sneakily hide cracked walls and imperfections.

Versatility is often overlooked, but wall panelling can be fully customisable. Any style, any spacing, any number of walls. You could even add panelling bit by bit over a period of time so there's no need to fully commit to a full room. Try a wall and see how you like it, panelling usually works best with a minimalist approach so starting with a little is how we would recommend approaching.

How?

You could call us. You could call another workshop or joiner. Maybe, you could do it yourself. DIY. A few tubes of no-nails, caulk, a pin-nailer and a pre-fab'd pack of MDF is what we suggest using. This give the best all round final product. The pin-nailer leaves no trace and the MDF is held well in place as the glue dries. The panelling is wired and glued to the wall which will massively increase its lifespan. For slatted wall panels use a strong glue only, ignore the screws they try to sell you and stay away from any style of nail gun. Its also good to paint the edges of the wall behind the cladding black. If the walls and ceilings are out then this helps to hide it.

Good Suppliers?

  • The Wood Veneer Hub - Contemporary slat and wood panels. We have purchased most of our panelling in recent years from here. Fast, efficient, easy to navigate website and a huge selection. Good people seem to be running it which makes a difference. Their supplier also seems to create slightly more robust units than their competitors and we are yet to be let down.

  • B&Q - Usually expensive but saw some really good deals when I last visited. I get reminded every now and then when I inevitably end up in B&Q at the weekend that despite being expensive for commodity type goods, they always have a few feature style products with a great price. Its good marketing to get folk in the shop cooing over bargain panelling but then spank them for two glues and a paint brush. I give them a lot of stick but in some instances they chuck a curve ball and surprise you.

  • MDF Direct - Good grade MDF products, all styles. Great for DIY guys. Easy to use online website. We tend to cut and detail our own MDF panelling here at the workshop, but unless you are doing large quantities you can save yourself the hassle of mess and tools by visiting the MDF Direct website and get them straight to your door.

  • DAB Chic & Vintage - Although we don't sell the panelling products. We can supply and fit any wall panelling. With MDF style panelling, we cut and curate our own parts for us to fit in your home. For most slatted wall panels we find a suitable supplier who meets your spec and we fit the products supplied by them. Give us your choice of colour or texture and we will source this for you.
  • Local Timbers Merchant - Will supply and if needed cut, all MDF sheet material. Cheapest overall if you a doing a larger job. Ideal for a professional who does this regularly or if you are an extremist and dead set on panelling a good chunk of your home. Its 100% worth giving your local merchant a call.

We say YES 100% go for it! Its an easy way to rejuvenate a room and start a new era for your home.
